Leu Falls Vs Euro, US Dollar Amid Greek Debt Crisis

The Romanian leu slightly lost ground versus the euro by midday Monday and the central bank set the leu’s reference rate versus the euro fell 0.79% to 4.4931 units, from 4.4577 units Friday.

Against the US dollar, the leu’s indicative lost 1.72% on the day to 4.0469 units.

Euro zone readies for Greek default after European partners refused to extend a credit lifeline to Athens, which asked for an extension of its bailout program beyond Tuesday, the day it must pay EUR1.6 billion to the International Monetary Fund.

The Greek government called a referendum on the bailout next Sunday. (Puterea)

 

Romania Insolvency Numbers Down 56.8% In January-May - Trade Registry

The number of companies that went insolvent in Romania in January-May fell 56.86% compared with the same period a year earlier, to 4.758 units, the Trade Registry office said.

In May, the number of companies that went insolvent rose 24.1% compared with the previous month.

Most insolvencies were registered in capital Bucharest (886 firms, down 52.19% compared to January-May 2014), Bihor (245, -65.84%), Timis (239, -41/71%).

The number of newly registered companies was the highest in Bucharest, namely 8,285, followed by Cluj, with 2,659, and Timis, with 2,147. Most of the newly registered companies operate in retail and vehicle repair sectors.  (Evenimentul Zilei)

 

Senate Adopts Draft Law On Amending Lawyer's Profession Law

Senate adopted, with 85 pros and 41 cons, a draft law on amending lawyer's profession law, which has been criticized by National Anticorruption Direction.

The draft law will then get to the Chamber of Deputies, which is a decisional chamber. One of the criticized amendments stipulates that prosecutors are not allowed to seize documents, audio, image and data between the lawyer and the client, namely the computers and mobile phones owned by the lawyers. Thus, lawyers would be able to create a criminal network in the IT system of a lawyer’s office just because their telephones and computers would be protected from investigators. (Adevarul)

 

Gabriel Oprea Announces Fusion Between UNPR And PP-DD

After PC and PLR have recently merged to create a new party, now Gabriel Oprea, head of National Union for the Progress of Romania (UNPR), announced the fusion by absorption between UNPR and PP-DD.

Oprea stated that UNPR “is a party with open doors for all those interested in politics for the national interest”.

According to UNPR president, the colleagues in PP-DD have a great quality, they come from their communities and have a tight connection with citizens, so that both the members of UNPR and PP-DD have things to learn from each other. (Puterea)

 

Over 18,000 Of Romanian Mothers Who Gave Birth Last Year Are Under 19

According to the National Statistics Institute data, vital statistics show that Romania is an old nation, with vulnerable mothers and unsteady marriages, unable to provide a favorable environment for children development.

Over 18,000 of the mothers who gave birth to a child last year are under 19. In 2014, approximately 118,000 children were born, down 7% compared to the previous year, while over 250,000 people died. Moreover, almost half of the children born last year have stay-at-home mothers, while 10% have teenager mothers.(Adevarul)
