Romania's Trade Registry Thursday said 5,082 companies filed for insolvency in the first quarter, down 18.6% from 6,250 companies in the same period a year earlier.

Romania's Trade Registry Thursday said 5,082 companies filed for insolvency in the first quarter, down 18.6% from 6,250 companies in the same period a year earlier.

Additionally, 7,209 companies halted operations in January to March, compared with 19,932 companies in the corresponding period of 2010.

Most of the companies that closed their doors operated in the retail sector, followed by manufacturing and construction companies, the data showed.

Nearly 21,700 Romanian companies went insolvent in 2010, up from 19,894 companies in the previous year.
