Astra Paid RON160M In Car Damages In 1Q

Romanian insurer Astra paid car damages worth 159.98 million lei (EUR38.89 million) in the first quarter this year, up 72.% on the same interval of 2010.

Astra paid RON105.27 million for 28,395 damage claims on the RCA segment (mandatory civil liability insurance), up 87% from the first quarter of last year, when it paid RON56.29 million. The insurer paid RON54.7 million for 14,240 damage claims on the CASCO segment (voluntary insurance), up 50% from the RON36.45 million in January-March 2010.

Last year, Astra underwrote premiums worth RON1.08 billion, up 34% from 2009, overtaking 2009 market leader Allianz-Tiriac Asigurari to rank first among local insurers.

The company ended the year with a net profit of RON25.33 million, 308% higher than in 2009.

Astra was founded in 1991 and has a share capital of RON192.71 million, controlled indirectly by businessman Dan Adamescu through Nova Trade, which owns 72.683% of the company, and Austrian financial group Uniqa, which owns 27%. (EUR1=RON4.1127)
