Boris Schneider, 51, has left his position as Asirom president, which he has held in the last six years, being replaced by Mariana Diaconescu, who was vice-president of the company.

"Mr. Schneider submitted his resignation in order to move on to new career opportunities, and his resignation has been accepted by the supervisory board. Ms. Diaconescu was appointed yesterday (Monday i.e.) as president of Asirom's management," specified company representatives.

Schneider, with almost thirty years' experience in the insurance industry, had become president in June 2005, when the shareholders chose a new management team to counter Asirom's decline.

Mariana Diaconescu came to Asirom as financial manager in 2005 as well, after previously being president of state-held import-export bank EximBank.

Diaconescu had been endorsed at the helm of Eximbank by PSD (Social Democratic Party) and was removed from her position after the PNL-PD alliance won the general elections in 2004.

She is married to senator Cristian Diaconescu, former justice minister in the government headed by Adrian Nastase, and earned 7,100 euros a month last year, according to her husband's personal financial disclosure statement.

Schneider's replacement comes after he failed to turn Asirom around, with the company sliding to number 6 on the market at present, after being a top three player in 2005.
