Foreign Market Rout Hurts Romanians With Swiss Franc Loans

Strong emotions for the 50,000 Romanians holding Swiss franc-denominated loans totaling EUR3.2 billion: the leu/franc exchange rate climbed beyond RON4 on Tuesday, marking an over 40% increase since the start of the year. From 2008, the Swiss franc has risen no less than 80% and against the summer of 2007 the rate has doubled.
