Highest Publicly-Disclosed Salaries

The highest salary in Romania for which there are official documents providing the name of the earner, is that of Ionut Costea, president of Eximbank, who in 2009 earned EUR27,000 per month. His earnings as head of a state-held bank, are higher than those of two heads of multinationals – Alexandrina Gatej (former CEO of Unilever South Central Europe) and Adrian Baicusi (former head of Siemens Romania), who managed hundreds or even thousands of employees and hundreds of millions of euros in turnover. A taboo subject in countries such as Belgium, the disclosure of the biggest salaries has become a subject for debate, both in the political world and among heads of multinationals, who often use the information to negotiate their salary packages.
