Leu Opens Down Vs Euro, Trades Around 4.48 Units

The Romanian leu lost ground in early session Friday, trading around 4.48 against the euro in a quiet market.

The leu opened at 4.481 to the euro, weaker than 4.472/4.474 to the euro in the last trading day of 2013.

The local currency gained a little ground after the first trades and traded at 4.4795/4.481 versus the euro by 10:30 local time (GMT0830).

Romania’s central bank set the leu’s exchange rate at 4.4847 per euro on December 31, 2013, about 0.5% weaker on the day and 1.2% lower compared to the end of 2012.

On the money market Friday morning, overnight rates were at 1%-1.5% a year.
