Romanian Leu Opens Weaker Vs Euro, In Line With Region

The Romanian leu opened Tuesday slightly weaker against the euro, in line with other currencies in the region, affected by negative sentiment following the new earthquakes in Japan, which reignited fears of a nuclear disaster.

The Romanian leu opened Tuesday slightly weaker against the euro, in line with other currencies in the region, affected by negative sentiment following the new earthquakes in Japan, which reignited fears of a nuclear disaster.

The leu opened at 4.11/4.1115 versus the euro, slightly weaker than 4.109/4.11 at closing the day before.

Later, the leu continued to weaken to an early low of 4.1155/4.117 to the euro. At around GMT0715, the leu was trading at 4.1125/4.115 to the euro.

The central bank set Monday the leu's reference at 4.1084 to the euro, slightly stronger on the day.

On the money market Tuesday morning, overnight rates were slightly up at 2.8%-3.3% a year, from 2.7%-3.2% a year the day before.
