Boagiu Pledges Romania Will Have 845 Km Of Highway In A Few Years

Romania will have 845 km of highway in a few years, compared to its current 313 km, following investments of EUR5.17 billion, Transport Minister Anca Boagiu said Friday.

Romania currently has 313 km of highway. Another 276 km are under construction, said Boagiu.

On Friday, the minister signed contracts for 98 km of highway on Pan-European Corridor IV, for a total value of EUR692.68 million, due to be completed by 2013. Four more contracts, for 85 km, worth EUR562 million, are to be signed soon.

"We have saved more than EUR600 million from nine highway contract tenders, which we will use to finance the construction of 71 km," said Boagiu.

She added that increasing the absorption of European funds is a top priority and intends to push the payment ratio from 4% to 20% by the end of the year.
