CFR Calatori To Close 4 Branches, Lay Off 1000 Employees

05.06.2011 By Bostan Radu

Romanian state-owned railway passenger carrier CFR Calatori Friday said it has begun restructuring its network, which will entail cutting the number of regional branches to four and laying off 1,021 employees.

CFR Calatori currently runs eight regional branches, in Bucharest, Craiova, Timisoara, Cluj, Brasov, Iasi, Galati and Constanta. Four of them - Craiova, Brasov, Galati and Constanta - will be converted to commercial offices, in charge of ticket sales and staffing with commercial personnel, such as cashiers.

The remaining branches, corresponding to four major regions, will be named Muntenia, Banat-Oltenia, Ardeal and Moldova.

In late April, the company informed the labor union federations about its intention to lay off 1,021 employees.

CFR Calatori did not provide a timeframe for the restructuring process.
