Romanian carmaker Dacia on Friday has ceased production at its car plant in Mioveni, southern Romania, until May 2, due to shortages of car parts.

According to Dacia representatives, car part delivery problems are caused by suppliers' financial difficulties and have nothing to do with the situation in earthquake and tsunami-hit Japan.

Dacia, owned by French group Renault, has about 15,000 employees and manufactures 1,377 cars per day.

Dacia's sales increased by 12% last year to 348,723 cars from 311,426 units and its market share in Europe increased by 0.3 percentage points to 1.6%.

Dacia sold 36,730 cars in Romania, down 20% compared to 2009.
