Senate Approves New Car Tax Formula

Romania's Senate on Wednesday approved a bill setting a new formula for the calculation of the car tax, which takes into account the vehicle's value according to brand, type and engine.

The bill, put forward by social democrat deputy Robert Sorin Negoita, says the tax is 0.75% of the car's value, which will be determined according to a catalog drawn up by the Ministry of Finance.

The Senate adopted the bill despite a negative report by the committee for budget and finance, which argued that the bill does not respect legislative standards. The committee also said the catalog of car values should be developed by technical experts, not by the Finance Ministry.
