Romania's Transport Ministry wants to award contracts worth about EUR3.3 billion by June this year for road and railway infrastructure work, state secretary Alexandru Nazare said Monday.

About EUR1 billion of the total sum is earmarked for work on four highway sectors, for which constructors were selected, but contracts have not yet been signed, as auctions have been contested.

In the upcoming two months, the ministry will launch auctions to award construction contracts worth EUR250 million for the beltways of the central cities of Brasov and Targu Mures and the southern cities of Mihailesti and Craiova.

According to Nazare, the ministry has also launched auctions to upgrade railway section Curtici-Radna for EUR276 million, modernize railway stations (contracts worth EUR115 million) and for projects regarding traffic management systems ERTMS (EUR50 million).

Nazare said that, in the next two months, state-run railway company CFR will hold auctions to restore sectors Simeria-Coslariu (for EUR600 million) and Coslariu-Sighisoara (for EUR900 million) and upgrade the two railway sections' traffic management systems (for EUR130 million).

The ministry also wants to award a contract to construct the 70-kilometer Dumbrava-Deva section of the Lugoj-Deva highway.

Romania can attract EUR4.7 billion in European funds through the operational program for transport.
