Romania’s natural gas pipeline system expanded by 955 kilometers to 35,680 kilometers in 2011, data from the statistics institute INS showed Wednesday.

Of that, over 20,690 kilometers were used to distribute natural gas to consumers in urban areas, the data showed.

Natural gas distribution declined to 10.27 billion cubic meters at the end of 2011, from 10.9 billion cubic meters a year earlier. Around 29% of the total gas distributed in 2011 went to household consumers.

Thermal energy distribution reached 12.34 million gigacalories, down by around 460,000 gigacalories from December 2010. Some 10.44 million gigacalories were used for household consumption.

The local water distribution system increased to 65,901 kilometers in 2011, from 63,095 kilometers in the previous year. Water consumption reached 1.02 billion cubic meters, down by 1.87 million cubic meters on the year. Household consumption stood at 66.2% of overall consumption.

End-2011, the sewerage system in Romania was 23,137 kilometers long, of which 19,088 kilometers were pipes in urban areas. Approximately 9.32 million Romanians were connected to the national sewerage system at the end of December, namely 43.5% of the total population.
