Romanian energy output fell 16.3% on the year to 10.88 million tons of oil equivalent in the first four months, due to declining production in the hydropower sector, official data showed Friday.

Hydropower output decreased 39.2% on the year to 4.01 billion kilowatts hour, the statistics institute INS said.

On the other hand, thermal power production rose 3.1% on the year to 11.6 billion KWh in January through April, while nuclear production inched up 1.1% to 4.08 billion KWh.

Wind farm production more than doubled to 877.2 million KWh in the first four months, from 401 million KWh in the same period of 2011.

Romania's primary energy resources fell 12.8% on the year to 14.4 million tons of oil equivalent in January through April, the data showed.

Electric energy resources were down 7% to 20.9 billion KWh, largely due to a 7.7% decline in production.

Romanian final power consumption reached 17.8 billion KWh in January through April, down 1.7% from the same period of 2011. Public illumination rose 8.5% on the year, while household consumption was up 1.5%.
