Romanian Health Minister Attila Cseke said Wednesday the hospital classification process has been completed and seven healthcare units were classed in category 1, the highest ranking.

About 58% of hospitals were classed in categories 4 (124 units) and 5 (96 units), the minister told a news conference.

The University Hospital and the Floreasca Hospital in capital Bucharest and five other healthcare units, located in Constanta, Timisoara, Cluj- Napoca, Iasi and Targu Mures, received the highest classification - 1st class.

The minister highlighted that, starting June 1, hospitals will receive financing based on clear norms which consider their class and expertise.

The first class includes hospitals with a vast field of expertise and state-of-the-art equipment, serving a large region of the country and able to cope with very complex illnesses.

The second class includes hospitals with a high number of facilities, serving a county and its neighbors, and treating complex illnesses.

The third class has hospitals with an average number of services, serving only a single county.

The fourth class includes basic hospitals, serving a single town and treating low-complexity illnesses.

The fifth class has units with limited competence, such as those providing specialized medical services.
