Romanians Dialed 112 Emergency Number 4.8 Million Times In 1Q, 74% Of Calls False

Romanians called the 112 emergency number 4.8 million times in the first quarter of the year, and 25.9% of calls were real and 74.1% false, according to data released by the Special Telecommunications Service (STS).

According to STS, 64.7% of emergency calls were directed to ambulance services, 23.54% to the Police, 10.3% to firefighting services and emergency rescue service SMURD, and 0.91% to the Gendarmerie.

Most of the false emergency calls were made from the central counties of Covasna and Harghita and the eastern county of Bacau by children, teenagers and people with mental problems.

Over 900 people have been punished for false or abusive emergency calls, said STS.

The single emergency telephone number system was introduced in Romania in April 2005.
