Basescu Says 2011 GDP Growth May Top Forecast

Romanian economic growth could top 2% this year, above the 1.5% official forecast, President Traian Basescu said Thursday.

Speaking at an economic seminar organized by financial daily Ziarul Financiar, Basescu said the official growth target remains 1.5% for this year and between 3.5% and 4% for 2012.

Basescu said the authorities should implement measures to stabilize the current account deficit at around 5% of the gross domestic product in 2011.

This is "a difficult", but not impossible task, he added.
