INS: Romania's Power Output Up 3.1% In First Five Months

07.10.2015 By Bogdan Neagu

Romanian electricity output rose 3.1% on the year to 26.97 billion kilowatt-hours in the first five months of 2015, fueled by higher production in the hydropower sector, official data showed Friday.

Hydropower production increased 18.4% to 8.61 billion kWh, while thermal power output declined 10.4% to 10.4 billion kWh, the statistics institute INS said.

Nuclear power production went down 2.3% on the year to 4.63 billion kWh in January to May, while the wind energy output rose 29.9% to 2.71 billion kWh. Solar power output increased 39% to 622 million kWh.

Romanian final power consumption reached 19.95 billion kWh in the first five months, down 4.8% from the same period of 2014, due to an 8% decline in demand from industrial customers.

Public illumination went up 27.6% year-on-year, while household consumption was 4.2% higher.

Electricity exports rose 83.3% year-on-year to 4.32 billion kWh in January-May, while imports were at 314.6 million KWh, more than double from 144 million KWh in the same period of 2014.

The country’s primary energy resources rose 3.1% on the year to 13.38 million tons of oil equivalent in the January-May period. Electric energy resources rose 3.7% to 27.29 billion kWh, fueled by the 3.1% increase in production.
