Romania Current Account Slips To EUR27M Deficit In Jan-Apr

Romania's current account balance posted deficit of 27 million euros after the first four months, compared with EUR326 million in the same period of 2014, central bank data showed Monday.

After the first quarter, the current account balance had a surplus of EUR406 million.

The goods and services balance posted a surplus of EUR162 million in January-April, down from EUR269 million in the year-ago period. The primary income deficit widened to EUR1.04 billion versus EUR992 million in January-April 2014, while the secondary income balance posted surplus of EUR854 million, more than double compared with EUR398 million in the first four months of last year.

Foreign direct investments were at EUR1.16 billion in the January-April period, up from EUR785 million in the same interval of 2014.

Romania's total external debt was EUR92.3 billion at the end of April, down from EUR94.3 billion in December 2014. The medium and long-term debt stood at EUR72.2 billion, while the short-term debt was EUR20.1 billion.

Last year, the country’s current account deficit narrowed to EUR696 million, from EUR1.17 billion in 2013.
