Romania’s energy output fell 2.6% on the year to 1.93 million tons of oil equivalent in January, mainly due to declining production in the thermal power sector, official data showed Thursday.

Thermal power production fell 16.6% on the year to 2.8 billion kilowatts hour in January, while nuclear energy production inched down 1% to 1 billion KWh, the statistics institute INS said.

On the other hand, hydropower output rose 30.9% on the year to 0.99 billion KWh in January, while wind farm production increased 66% to 0.45 billion KWh.

Romania's primary energy resources fell 4.6% to 2.67 million tons of oil equivalent in the first month of the year compared with the same period of 2012, while electric energy resources were down 4% to 5.35 billion KWh, the data showed.

Final power consumption reached 4.4 billion KWh in January, down 5% from the similar period of 2012. Public illumination fell 2.4% on the year, but household consumption was up 5.4%.
