08.11.2015 By Bogdan Neagu

Romanian electricity output rose 1.6% on the year to 31.48 billion kilowatt-hours in the first six months of 2015, fueled by higher production of renewable energy, official data showed Tuesday.

Hydropower production increased 11.6% to more than 10 billion kWh, while thermal power output declined 9.8% to 12 billion kWh, the statistics institute INS said.

Nuclear power production went down 0.6% on the year to 5.55 billion kWh in January to June, while the wind energy output rose 25.9% to 3.05 billion kWh. Solar power output increased 32.4% to 808.8 million kWh.

Romanian final power consumption reached 23.56 billion kWh in the first six months, down 4.9% from the same period of 2014, due to an 8% decline in demand from industrial customers.

Public illumination went up 28.7% year-on-year, while household consumption was 4.3% higher.

Electricity exports rose 69.1% year-on-year to 5.01 billion kWh in January-June, while imports were at 456.7 million KWh, more than triple from 147.8 million KWh in the same period of 2014.

The country’s primary energy resources rose 3.5% on the year to 15.92 million tons of oil equivalent in the January-June period. Electric energy resources rose 2.6% to 31.94 billion kWh, fueled by the 3.1% increase in production.
