Romania’s trade deficit narrowed to EUR300.8 million in January, from EUR460.2 million in the year-earlier month, the country’s statistics institute INS said Tuesday.

Exports rose 6.1% on the year to EUR3.7 billion in January, while imports were up 1.3% to EUR4 billion.

Vehicles made up for the bulk of exports and imports, amounting to 41.7% of overall exports and 35.4% of the imports, the data showed.

Compared with December 2012, exports increased 18% and imports were down 0.7%.

Exports are calculated exclusive of costs, insurance and freight fees, but imports are calculated including such costs.

Romania’s trade deficit narrowed to EUR9.6 billion in 2012, from EUR9.67 billion a year earlier.
