Tourist Arrivals In Romania Up 10% On Year In May

Arrivals at Romanian tourism accommodation establishments rose 9.8% in May from the year-earlier month, while overnight staying increased 12.6% on the year, data from the statistics institute INS showed Tuesday.

Residents accounted for 73.8% of total arrivals at accommodation establishments in May, while foreigners made up for the reminder 26.2%. The vast majority of foreign visitors (76.4%) came from Europe, the data showed.

Bucharest and county capitals attracted most foreign tourists in May (78.5% of arrivals at accommodation structures), followed by other localities and tourist destinations (11%) and mountain resorts (6.5%).

Border crossings of foreigners to Romania went up 0.4% on the year in May, while Romanian tourist departures aboard increased 6%, INS said.

In the first five months of 2014, tourist arrivals at Romanian accommodation establishments rose 6.2% compared with the year-earlier period, while overnight accommodations edged up 9.9%.
