Over 500 hotels in Romania, or about 25% of total units, should be closed down due to poor comfort conditions, Paul Marasoiu, director of the Tourism Department within the Tourism Ministry, told a news conference Thursday.

According to Marasoiu, 1,225 checkups were carried out on the Black Sea coast in the first quarter of the year and 147 units were fined 1.4 million lei (EUR342,000).

Authorities suspended three operation authorizations and withdrew 80 classification certificates.

He added more hotels will be declassified this year.

Eight hotels have been closed down, of which one on the seacoast, said Marasoiu.

Marasoiu highlighted special offers on the seacoast this summer will trigger price decreases of up to 5%. (EUR1=RON4.0906)
