Basescu Wants New Constitution Adopted Before 2012 Parliamentary Elections

President Traian Basescu said on public television late Thursday he wants the referendum on a new Constitution to take place simultaneously with local elections in June next year so parliamentary elections in November-December 2012 will be organized based on the new fundamental law.

The head of state said his near-future plan is to send the bill revising the Constitution to the Legislative Council and the Constitutional Court for endorsement.

He highlighted the bill implements the results of the national referendum held on November 21, 2009, when Romanians voted for a single-chamber Parliament with 300 lawmakers, as well as many of the decisions of the Constitutional Court, which clarify several articles of the current fundamental law.

The head of state said he is confident lawmakers will not reject the bill.
