Government Likely To Debate New Postal Voting Bill This Week

The government is likely to debate this week a new bill regarding postal voting for Romanians abroad, Foreign Affairs Minister Teodor Baconschi said Monday.

After debates in the Government, the bill, which has been put forward by the minister, will be sent to the Parliament.

Baconschi said the "right to vote of Romanians abroad" is "a constitutional right valid in any functional democracy", adding he wishes all politicians would back the bill.

End-March, the Senate's committee for legal matters rejected with four to two votes a bill backed by the ruling Democratic Liberal Party that introduced postal voting for Romanians abroad.

The opposition Liberal and Social Democratic parties accused the ruling coalition of trying to create a mechanism to help rig elections.
