05.06.2011 By Ioana Tudor

Romanian opposition social democrat MP Victor Socaciu has put forward a bill whereby foreign language films will be dubbed into Romanian.

According to the bill, foreign films would be translated into Romanian through the dubbing technique and audiovisual watchdog CNA would see to it that the measure is observed.

Socaciu said his proposition aims to "protect national identity", arguing that film subtitling, which "introduces new words", "deteriorates the language".

The social democrat lawmaker said dubbing will also make the film's message more accessible.

The bill was submitted at the Chamber of Deputies and is pending the approval of the Legislative Council and the Government's standpoint.
