Romania's President Introduces Revised Constitution Draft

06.01.2011 ZF English

The Presidential Administration published Wednesday on its website the draft of the revised Constitution, including, among others, a single-chamber Parliament with a maximum of 300 members.

President Traian Basescu sent the bill to the Legislative Council for a standpoint.

After the council issues a standpoint on the bill, the draft act will be sent to the Constitutional Court, which will check whether it is constitutional.

The bill, together with the standpoint of the Legislative Council and the decision of the Constitutional Court, will be forwarded to the Parliament for debate.

The head of state said recently the bill revising the Constitution implements the results of the national referendum held on November 21, 2009, when Romanians voted for a single-chamber Parliament with 300 lawmakers, as well as many of the decisions of the Constitutional Court, which clarify several articles of the current fundamental law.
