Transparency International: Romanians’ Trust In Public Institutions Dropped In 2010

05.25.2011 By Tudor Ioana Raluca

The annual National Report on Corruption released Wednesday by Transparency International indicates a worrying deterioration of the public integrity climate in Romania.

The report calls attention to the Government's endeavor to counter the economic crisis at any costs, as soon as possible.

According to the document, the Romanian public integrity climate deteriorated in the interval analyzed (October 2009-February 2011, e.n.) and was marked by a lack of strategic coordination between legislative and institutional measures.

The authors of the report point out that the legislative and institutional measures implemented by Romanian authorities in the interval mentioned above were characterized by "inconsistency" and were rather a consequence of the "bitter" political fight for public resources.

"This very inconsistency gave birth to severe weak points regarding the never-ending fight against corruption and the process to create public integrity in Romania," reads the report.

The document also criticizes the "formalism and lack of coherence" of Government's decisions, as well as Romanians' relinquishment, and identifies these two aspects as the main cause which rendered the fight against corruption inefficient.

Transparency International Romania leader Victor Alistar highlighted Romanians' trust in public institutions has decreased severely.
