U.S. Court Approves Extradition Of Mihai Necolaiciuc, Wanted In Romania For Fraud

Romania's Justice Ministry said Wednesday that the United States' Department of Justice has announced that a U.S. court has authorized the extradition of Mihai Necolaiciuc, wanted in Romania for embezzlement.

Necolaiciuc may challenge the extradition decision before a District Court and then before the United States Supreme Court.

The Justice Ministry said it has sent three requests for Necolaiciuc's extradition, the latest on January 31, 2011, which will be examined by U.S. authorities.

Necolaiciuc is in custody since June 2009, having been detained for residing illegally in the U.S.

Necolaiciuc is accused of having made unwarranted investments between 2000 and 2003, while he was the head of national railroad company CFR. He allegedly purchased products at overestimated prices, causing losses of around EUR50 million.
