Romanian National Anticorruption Department prosecutors on Thursday indicted union leader Marius Petcu, who was caught rapid taking EUR40,000 in bribes.

Romanian National Anticorruption Department prosecutors on Thursday indicted union leader Marius Petcu, who was caught rapid taking EUR40,000 in bribes.

According to the prosecutors, between September 2009 and March 2011, as president of the Sanitas union federation, Petcu received a total 1,398,400 lei (almost EUR342,000) from a businessman, in exchange for a project contract.

On February 1, Petcu received a villa worth RON535,165, located in the Predeal mountain resort, from the same businessman, who is the informer in this case.

Petcu was caught on March 24 after he received EUR40,000 - the tranches of the bribe for January and February 2011.

The union leader was arrested for 29 days by order of the Supreme Court. The Anticorruption Department also placed a distraint on Petcu's property and finances.
